Isabella "Nice Knives" Release Show // Oct. 22nd, 2016
If you would've asked me a year ago what I would be doing now, I can 100% assure you something like this would definitely not have been on the list. Of course, as many of you probably already know, I have always loved taking photos and sharing my experiences. Not only for the purpose of archiving my life, but also the creative aspect of capturing a moment in time, and giving a glimpse of how I see it through my own eyes. I ALSO have loved music since I came out of the womb, so when I was asked to shoot for a local band, I died, multiple times, and then I said yes.
Isabella, a 5 piece band from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, released their new EP Nice Knives last Saturday in St. Louis at The Firebird. The overall experience was amazing, but the fact that this was a local band made it so much more rewarding. To be completely honest, I had no idea what to expect when I got there. An unfortunate turn of events caused the one person I was actually going to know there, to not be able to attend, so I was going in alone. Isabella went on at 10:30 pm, but prior to that, Amirical & Niko Scarpy, For The City, Yearlong Hours, and My Legacy, My Ghost, all played amazing sets, which really set the tone for the rest of the night.
Nice Knives and Isabella have this great roughness about them, so I wanted the photos to reflect that. I kept it really contrasted, and enhanced whatever grain was already there. My camera is decent in low light, but it still gets pretty noisy at a higher ISO. The lighting at the venue that night gives me goose bumps every time I look back at the photos, so I tried to keep as many in color as I could. And to top it off, I had to sneak some Instax shots in, because duh.
This was my first time shooting at The Firebird, and I can definitely see it as being one of my favorites from here on out. Everyone was friendly, and it was really easy for me to move around and get the shots I was looking for. It's also nice because it's located downtown and close to the highway, so it's really easy to either A. go out somewhere after a show or B. get out quickly to go home. Either way, it's a win-win situation.
All in all, I had a pretty amazing time. I'm so happy that I was given the opportunity to not only do something I love, but also help someone capture a time in their life doing something that they love too. I can't wait to see what Isabella, and the other amazing bands that played, do next. I've chosen to display some of my favorite shots from the night in this post, but if you scroll to the bottom I've put a link to the full gallery.
